The Skinny On Fat - Why Fat Makes You Thin!
1) Fat Is Satisfying
Research has shown that those who get an adequate amount of fat in their diets generally eat less than those who try to reduce fat intake. The less you eat, the fewer calories you consume. Getting an adequate amount of fat in the diet is essential for effective and permanent weight loss. When people get hungry soon after a meal, they tend to over eat at the next. When you are less hungry during the day, you'll cut down on snacks and eat less at mealtimes. As a result, you consume fewer calories.
Satiating fat leaves you feeling full. When the fat you eat hits your small intestine, it sets off a cascade of signals which includes the release of hormones such as CCK and PYY. These two hormones play a major role in appetite regulation and satiety; they leave you feeling full and satisfied. The more satiated you are, the less likely that you're going to sneak in snacks between meals or pile on a second helping.
2) Fats Are A Source Of Energy
In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, researchers reviewed all the published studies to-date on Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s) and weight management. These studies demonstrated the diets containing MCT’s resulted in an increase in energy, a rise in metabolism, increased burning of calories, decreased food consumption, lower body fat mass, and reduced body weight.
3) Higher Fat, Lower Insulin
Certain fats like Oleic acid - a monounsaturated fat found in olive oil, promotes fat burning and lowers insulin sensitivity. Also Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT's) have the same effect. Medium-chain fatty acids, found in coconut oil, palm oil and butter, might help decrease insulin resistance and lower insulin levels in high-saturated-fat diets, according to a study that appeared in the February 2009 issue of the journal "Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews." In the laboratory animal study, diets supplemented with medium-chain fatty acids resulted in decreased fasting blood sugar levels, implying decreased insulin levels. Researchers noted that the benefits were obtained without restricting total calorie intake. Researchers of a laboratory animal study published in the December 2012 issue of the journal "Perspectives in Diabetes" found that medium-chain fatty acids decreased fat accumulation and improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity after four weeks of a high-fat diet that included high concentrations of medium-chain fatty acids.

5) Fat Makes Us Happy
"Oh I just love this nonfat cheese, it tastes so good and makes me so happy!" said no one - ever. Let's face it, though some of us sucked down that nonfat, low-fat garbage, it never tasted good, and it never made us happy. Eating yummy foods makes you happy, and it turns out low-fat versions just don’t do the trick for one surprising reason: We can taste the fat — not just the salt, sugar and other goodies in food.
Recent research from Purdue University shows that our taste buds can detect fat in food, which helps explain why low-fat foods don’t curb our fat cravings. According to the research, fat may be an entirely different basic taste than what we’ve long considered the four mainstays: sweet, salty, sour and bitter. On an even happier fat note, omega-3 fatty acids can boost serotonin levels in the brain, helping to improve mood, and plain and simple, make us happy.
6) Fat Builds Muscle
Eating good fats along with an effective exercise program can increase muscle. Increasing muscle mass is vital to increasing metabolism and burning calories both in and out of the gym. In a 2011 study published in Clinical Science, researchers examined the effects of eight weeks of PUFA (Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) supplementation in adults ages 25 to 45 and found that the fat increases protein concentration and the size of muscular cells in the body. Previous studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids stimulate muscle protein synthesis in older adults and can mediate muscle mass loss due to aging.
