A Few Of My Favorite Things

Have you ever had anyone ask you if you were stranded on a desert island what would be the one or two things, you couldn't live without? Tough question, right?! Our mind races to think of all the parameters, all the probabilities, all the variables and how to answer that question as precisely and perfectly as possible.

For me, hands down, one of the things that comes to mind is collagen. Weird, right?! Why, of all the things you could choose, would you choose collagen? Well, good question. And I have a very good answer to give you. Because collagen is so all-encompassing, it covers so many different areas and benefits of our well-being, it behooves me to go into a bit of greater detail to explain why I love collagen and why I would want it with me on a desert island.

First of all, what IS collagen? Collagen is the major structural protein of all mammalian body. The word collagen is derived from kolla, the Greek word for glue. It is a strong fiber that weaves throughout the body for strength and support to factually hold the body together. Collagen is the most abundant fibrous protein in the body. Collagen is an extremely important fibrous protein that is found in connective tissue – it's in our bones, our joints and is also a major component of our skin. In fact, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body making up around 30% of all the body's proteins. It has a distinctive spectrum of amino acids that can benefit hair, skin, and nails. It contains a well rounded nitrogen balance that can promote anti-aging effects. Collagen helps support the body's natural ability to repair supporting connective tissues such as bone, tendons, and ligaments that begin to diminish in early adulthood.

Interestingly, abstracts in Pub Med, the research branch for the National Research of Biotechnology Information, point to collagen hydrolysate being a viable option for the treatment of osteoarthritis and other joint disorders. It is a well-documented fact that collagen is a huge contributor to joint, bone and ligament health.

I CANNOT stress how valuable this is. Movement is CRUCIAL folks.  As we increase in years, our ability to move, and move well is paramount. There is nothing worse than to see a "young something-year-old" crippled because of an inability to move. It doesn't have to be that way. Enter: COLLAGEN. No, it's not a panacea. But it has helped so many people regain mobility, it warrants our recognition.
