Defining Detox

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word detox? It carries with it a lot of different meaning to each one of us.  Cleanse, purify, juicing, fasting, stringent eating, deprivation and a host of other connotations can be added. The dictionary defines detoxification as, "the process of removing toxic substances or qualities. " Wikipedia goes on to say it's the "physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver. Additionally, it can be referred to the period of withdrawal during which an organism returns to homeostasis after long-term use of an addictive substance."

Some of these words jump out at me. Do they jump out at you too? Words like "removing", "removal", and "withdrawal" all have fairly negative overtones. Human instinct is we don't want to lose something. But then there's the word "return" which is warm, comforting and hopeful. For example, we look forward to the return of a loved one from being away. Lastly, the words "addictive substance" are pretty heavy, I get an instant image of a ball and chain.

I'd like to take the liberty to redefine the word detoxification, breathing new life into a word rife with meaning and emotion. Detoxification is bringing vibrancy and radiance back into our being: spirit, soul, and body, through foods that have cellular energy and light. Sure, we all have a deck of cards that was handed to us - our DNA, but that doesn't mean we can't change it like we once believed and were told. We can rewrite the story. We can re-code the software, removing what no longer serves us and adding what is beneficial for our vitality.

Some years back when I was studying nutrition in college, I had a research paper to write on the human detoxification system. It was one of those aha moments. I remember it like it was yesterday it was that breathtaking. As I was researching, pouring over a vast number of pages from huge, monolithic books, and documents, and videos I saw the true uniqueness of humanity. Nowhere do you see the distinctive individuality of each human being then in the detoxification system. Which is why we need to detoxify according to our own unique and very special body, being sensitive to ourselves in the process.

Detoxification is lifting up the hood, so to speak, and knowingly or unknowingly finding out what needs adjusting, what needs to be realigned, what's low on fluids and needs to be refilled, and where's the gunk that needs to be removed and cleaned so we can see our face once again in the gleaming chrome. Nice. I like this picture. Detoxification is an auto check to make sure we keep purring nicely along; we're in it for the long haul you know.

I seem to use this phrase often. We're in it for the long haul. And that we are. I don't know about you, but I love life. No, I LOVE life! Crazy about it. I love getting up in the morning and being in awe of a new day, with new possibilities, new horizons I've never seen before or even knew were imaginable. I often feel like a kid playing superhero ready to tear it up and conquer something new. But I want to do all this fantastic living as healthy and well as I possibly can. And the best part of it is, I can! I have, we have the power to make vibrant living a reality. To look forward to the best years of our life yet to be seen. What a journey! And we've only just begun. Won't you join this journey with me? Be part of this crazy, life-loving tribe that thinks we can conquer the world?
